If you’re anything like 99.99% of the world, you’ve probably had a challenging year. Corona. Meron. Surfside. Missiles flying in Israel. Anti-Semitism in the streets of America.
As 5781 draws to a close, we all know one thing: After this year, life will never be the same.
And it shouldn’t be.

Hakshiva: Helping Our Youth
Hakshiva designed this epic event with you and your family in mind – because helping Jewish families is what we do. For the past 15 years we’ve served as the go-to organization for families in Ramat Beit Shemesh whose children are in need of any kind of support, be it emotional or educational. Our holistic child services range from educational assistance for children with learning issues to one-on-one and group counseling for children with emotional and social issues to mentoring at-risk teens. Whatever the challenge, we provide support - not just to the child, but to the entire family.
From prevention to intervention, we’re proud to be the first-line resource for everything youth-related in our community. It’s difficult enough raising children today; when you see your child struggling with a challenge, it can be downright frightening. Especially for parents who may be immigrants themselves, as so many RBS residents are, and who must watch their child struggling through a system with which they are totally unfamiliar.
Imagine what it feels like to see your formerly sweet and sociable 13-year-old daughter suddenly become sullen and withdrawn. You wonder: is this normal teenage behavior? Do I just close my eyes and wait for her real self to return in five years? Or is something else going on?
Frightening scenarios flood your mind, because we’re all aware of the terrible possibilities out there, the what-if-this-happened and what-if-she’s-about-to-do-this that can eat away at your insides. And, of course, because you’re a parent, underlying all those worries is a piercing layer of guilt: should I have done something differently? Is this my fault?
This is why Hakshiva was founded – so that parents should never feel alone. So that the thousands of children in our community and their parents should always have a place to turn, where they can receive the support they need.
And then, COVID hit.
The havoc that the COVID crisis wreaked on our youth is impossible to fully assess, and will be felt for years to come. But it can be measured in small part by the sheer number of phone calls we received, the number of desperate pleas for help from parents, from educators, from anyone in a position to see the effects of extended lockdown and lack of structure on such a vulnerable population.
Our staff worked overtime to respond to this need, and, today, we’re working to implement several new programs to address the emotional fallout of COVID on our youth.
We’ve seen up close the impact COVID has had on our children, on our families, and on all of us.
They need our help now more than ever. If we don’t give them the support they need now, it will be too late.
Join us on Aug. 16-17 for an unforgettable event. And please partner with us, so that we can continue providing the youth and their families with the support they desperately need in these challenging times – so that no child should ever have to feel helpless and alone.
