Help us acquaint foreign readers with the best of modern Israeli literature by enabling the translation of Hebrew and Arabic literature

Even a small gift contributes to a translation grant that will make an Israeli publication accessible to readers around the world, or to a special project that publicizes and assists Israeli authors.

The Institute for the Translation of Hebrew Literature was founded in 1962 to acquaint foreign readers with the best of modern Israeli literature. In 1986 the Institute became an independent non-profit organization, today highly regarded throughout the world having released over 7,000 translated publications, reaching millions of readers worldwide.

Currently, the Institute participates in international book fairs, maintains a multi-year subsidy program for foreign publishers to assist with translation grants, initiates and promotes anthologies of the best Hebrew literature in dozens of languages, conducts translation workshops and promotes various unique projects. In addition, the Institute’s website is home to a comprehensive bibliographic database which lists all translations of Hebrew literature into foreign languages - an invaluable resource for publishers and researchers. It includes over 67,000 records of translated material in 82 languages, a separate entry for each literary work, as well as author & title indexes in Hebrew and English.

Future plans include:
- Increasing grant awards to authors for the purposes of translation.
- Expanding contact with international and local publishers and finding excellent sub-agents around the world who will work vigorously to promote writers and poets.
- Boosting participation in international book fairs and appropriate festivals and events.
- Initiating and strengthening ties between writers, translators and publishers from the Arab world in order to promote books by Israeli Arab authors worldwide.
- Providing international workshops for translators.
- Initiating residencies and literary exchanges for authors and translators to promote dialogue.
