He had always been mean  - calling her unspeakable names, spilling drinks on purpose just so she had to clean them, even preventing her from accessing their joint bank account - but it was only after he hit her that she was absolutely certain she had to get out of her marriage

Unfortunately, years after their civil divorce, Rachel’s husband maintains his abusive control over her. He has something she desperately needs: the get, or Jewish divorce. Without a get, Rachel cannot move on and rebuild her life. She is an agunah, chained to a dead marriage.

The bad news is that there are countless women just like Rachel, and probably even a few in your own community.
